I have been wondering why we keep the roman numerals.

I know we use them even when referring to the scripture.

Would the Vatican be upset if I was to write the Holy Father name as Pope Benedict 16th?

It would only by Benedict 16th in English. In other languages there are different letters following the numbers.

I would stick to the traditional numbering so we don’t start seeing lists like

Ben XIV
Ben XV
Ben 16th

I like how Benedict 10000 sounds…

Binary is cool, but I agree that it is better to just use the traditional Benedict XVI

This is the reason that we need to bring back Latin as the universal lingua franca!

Doesn’t it rather make sense that the ROMAN Catholic Pope would use that number system for a “ceremonial” reason where it’s HIGHLY unlikely that any math will be used!?

If might annoy the Vatican a bit if we refered to the Pope as:

Pope Benedict V+IV-III+X

Not necessarily. I’ve usually seen only the Hindu-Arabic numerals for this.

Of course, Greek and Slavonic books use the alphabetical numerals.

Objectively it’s not wrong **but **why would you want to do that? This is how it’s traditionally written so why change it? This doesn’t make any sense to me, you know…🤷

Some say we don’t say Roman Catholic anymore jus Catholic of the Latin rite so maybe we should do away with the roman numerals and I’m surprised we haven’t already.
I have seen the 16th in some more secular articles about the activites happening with the Pope.
The Ten Commandments are listed in the CCC pg.496
with normal linear numbers not roman numerals.
I’m not changing it just a thought, I don’t mind roman just wondered if the vatican would object. Sounds like it would cause too much confusion as if something was sent the computer would see it as the same or would not correct it so I see most leagal documents as on the sites are all roman numerals.

When I say Pope Benedict 16th and Pope Benedict XVI it sounds exactly the same…I don’t why you have a problem with how you say it.😛

You are joking, right? 🙂

Does “Sixteenth” and “Seizième”, both derived from “16th” (somehow, which would no doubt annoy a Francophone enormously!), REALLY sound the same?

But then, YOU are probably not speaking french.

Why did I answer that post of yours!? Obviously I had too much time on my hands, and felt like I needed some finger exercise.

Shouldn’t that be Benedict 16th Maybe the problem with typing a superscript is justification for not using it. 😃

Edited - that th was a superscript when I posted it. Just didn’t come out that way. As I said that’s the problem.

Or we can use the hexadecimal base:

Benedict 10

Only geeks will get this one. 🙂

Yes, but Benedict 10 in Hex could be Benedict the 2nd in Binary.

You would have to use a designator such as Hex, or Bin or else you would have a bit of confusion. 🙂

Now I know why I come to this forum!

It is such a relief to know I am not the oly geek out there with a sense of humor! 🙂

Well I like to be modern but when I see the Pope Benedict 16th I guess I can assume they are of the same that write CE instead of AD, nothing like trying to confuse myself. I do think it is interesting.

Where would Star Wars and Star Trek be without Roman numerals?🙂

I have written Rome requesting they reinstate the inquisition. You should be hearing from them soon.

lol, just kidding. 😛 I’m sure Rome wished folks writing 16th instead of XVI is all they had to worry about. 😉
