Can we say Pope Benedict 16th

The custom actually follows monarchs. Henry VIII, Louis XIV, etc.

A funny story: When I was subbing in a Catholic high school, one of my students saw a reference to Malcolm X, and said “I didn’t know there were 10 popes named Malcolm.”

Do you suppose people bet the odds on his number?

I’m not a betting person but sometimes I wonder how people come up with the numbers they pick.
 
You can use “16th” instead of XVI if you like, but you won’t look very educated or well read if you do.

Roman numerals are customarily used in the written English language for pope, monarchs, superbowls, wrestlemanias as well as ordinary people.

Its just a convention to make things easier to read, and relieve a little confusion.
 
Have you guys ever noticed that when clocks have roman numerals, they depict 4 as “IIII” instead of “IV?”

Pay attention next time.

I get so sad with this statement when it deals with The Church. It’s like, NOW, after all these years people have been on earth, WE KNOW ALL…well, I like the someone elses statement on another thread of “one day we will look back and say what the” heck (didn’t put heck in quotes cause they used another word)

I can’t see how or why they would have bet on his number…

I can see maybe people would have speculated as to which papal name the newly elected pope would take… But it kind of goes without saying that the number will be a given. The fact that the last John Paul was “2” garuntees the next, if there is one will be “3”, the next Paul would be “7”, the next Pius XII and the next John XIV…

The numbers are no great mystery.

Okay, when I read your post, I thought…no way does my Howard Miller mantle clock have this and guess what geek…it does!

Wow, so much discussion about this… I thought I was the only one who had noticed it.

In all honesty, it is probably just a traditional thing that started for no special reason. It might just have been a mistake in the first place, or a case of a clock maker running out of “Vs”. Have you noticed those old fashioned diner wall menus that are assembled letter by letter? Sometimes they use zeros for “Os”. I guess it must have been something like this.

Or not.

I’m sure Jimmy Aiken would know.

I am not sure what you mean by “how people come up with the numbers they pick.” Do you mean how the Holy Father came up with XVI (16)? That would be because there have already been 15 previous Popes with the name Benedict.

Or did you mean something else? I am confused by your post.

Yes I assumed there was a 15 previous I know they go on down or up the line, but I was thinking if people chose 16 now as a “lucky” number.😊 🤷

I did hear somewhere that it is because there is a face on the clock? I wasn’t sure what that meant. So the ones without a face use IV. Now I will be obsessed with checking this out when I shop.:o
