My mother just passed away with Alzheimer’s Disease. Is it possible that, during that time of suffering, her spirit could have been in contact with our Lord and that her time locked up in the world of non-communication could have be used as time in purgatory?

I am so sorry for your loss and will pray with you for the repose of your mother’s soul. I also pray that God will grant you comfort and healing.

As to your question, St. Augustine said:
Temporal punishments are suffered by some in this life only, by some after death, by some both here and hereafter, but all of them before that last and strictest judgment. But not all who suffer temporal punishments after death will come to eternal punishments, which are to follow after that judgment (*The City of God *21:13).
This indicates that the sufferings of this life can indeed purify us and make us ready for the next life.
