I have question!
Can we write any thing in the Bible or highlight the verses with highlighter or underline some favorite verses?
Is any thing bible advice us about it?
What the church says about it?
Please tell me about this I am so nervous and afraid because I study with one Bible and I have had used it since 2000. I underline and highlight lot of verses. Yesterday one my friend anger with me. He said it’s a kind of sin you add the things. But I am not add any thing I just highlight or underline the verses, is it sin?
I am worried and upset.
 
No, it’s fine. As long as it’s your own bible and not one you checked out from the library.

People have been recording important events in family bibles for generations. Some bible verses themselves are thought to have originally been marginal notes added by scribes copying older manuscripts centuries ago.
 
What you’re asking is whether or not you can study the Bible, in the sense of “get this material into your head” like you studied history and math and economics and whatnot in school.

Now ask yourself whether you’re supposed to study the Bible in that way.

To my knowledge (granted, I’m no Canon lawyer), the Church is silent on this issue.

I would imagine that intent makes all the difference. If you were writing disparaging comments or drawing pictures all over it with the intent of defacing it, that seems vastly different from underlining and highlighting important passages – or even making study notes in the margin.

The Bible is not the physical manifestation of our Lord – the Eucharist is. Treat it with reverence and respect; don’t leave it sitting on the back of the toilet, or throw it on the floor when you’re done reading, for sure – but if there’s a passage that you feel compelled to highlight for future reference, I see no reason not to do so.

NO there’s nothing in cannon law about writing/highlighting in the Bible because there is NOTHING wrong with it.

As a matter of fact some Bibles are made with wide margins (1 inch or more) just for note taking purposes. These Bible also have thicker paper that can with stand the ink better.

www.catholiccompany.com sells Bible Marking Kits with highlighters and dry highlighters that are non-bleeding.

All are meant to aid in Bible Study! Enjoy your Bible Studies and don’t worry about what your friend has to say…

I underline verses in my Bible all the time. I certainly don’t think there is anything wrong with it…as long as you’re not doodling or something along those lines, it should be fine.
 
A bible that has been used, had notes taken in it, highlighted… what a wonderful gift to someday leave your children.

It is the study guide given to us by the church… all study guides need notes. 😃
 
As long as you’re not writing “TRASH” or some epithet across the pages with a black Sharpie, you’re fine. 😃
 
I have more than one Bible. I have a nice one with a burgundy leather zippered cover and gold edged pages that I take to Mass or adoration with me - that one never gets a mark in it, only holy cards stuck in various places.

I have a study Bible I keep near the bed that has all sorts of footnotes and study parts with it. I don’t really write in that one too much, I have a tendency to fall asleep with a pen in the bed and it’s not pretty.

Then I have my Bible I really use for study. When I took the Apologetics Class at Saint Michael’s Media, I wrote all over the thing, highlighted all sorts of stuff, and took notes everywhere. Now, if I ever have to go back to support some teaching of the Church, I can recall why it is what it is in addition to having the scripture passage right there with the notes. Very helpful.

Then there is the family Bible - the gorgeous one with with heavy leather tooled and gilded cover with Jesus on the front - that one only gets the family events written in the appropriate pages.

There are many Bibles for many purposes. Use them appropriately and you won’t have a problem.

Is this an answer? lol…I sure have no idea what it is…

Write away, I’ve filled one and am now on a second…It does present a problem tho…you can only write so much and you have no more room. Consider for your own peace of mind making notes on your computer, use a online bible and you can always have plenty of room for notes.

I have only one Bible my own. So that is my personal and i study on it and use it every where.
My other family members have their on Bibles too.
 
Sure, as long as it’s your own Bible and you’re not writing “bad” things. I used to use colored pencils in mine because they wouldn’t bleed through, until they came up with better highlighters. 👍

Only that the Church has always venerated the Sacred Scriptures. The Church does not prohibit her children from studying the Bible. If the highlighting and margin-notes help you appreciate the Word of God more then more power to you.

Your friend may be thinking of the books of Leviticus and Revelation where there are verses about adding to the words of the book. His personal interpretation of these verses with respect to your highlighting and notes-in-the-margin is far too literal. Maybe that’s why such Bible-only Christians use a notebook instead of writing in the Bible itself.

You don’t need to worry about the comment of a friend. If you highlight or underline Bible texts, it means that you are bent on learning and assimilating what the Bible teaches. as long as your attitude is that of reverence, that is OK with me.

“Dirty Bible” in this context is one that is highlighted, and full of notes written by the individual who uses/studies that specific Bible.

(Granted, you probably didn’t want a Protestant spin on the subject.)

I like to highlight my Bibles and write notes in them. This helps me to remember important things when I go back and read them again. I read the Bible all the way through every year, and I use different translations. Adding highlighter and notes helps me. I always learn something new each time I read the same thing, because the Holy Spirit always has something new to tell me. I do not think I will ever be able to stop learning from the Bible, because it always speaks to me in a new way each time I read it.
 
Just get a good (nothing fancy) bible and MAKE IT YOURS. Write in it highlight etc. The inspired word of God is to be studied loved and followed in daily life.

If its your Bible don’t worry about it. Your friend is wrong.
