I have heard people say that John Paul II’s definition concerning “priestly ordination” for women leaves open the role of deacon, as that is not “priestly”. In conjunction with Pope Benedicts changes to Canon Law (Canon 1009 §3) some consider it possible to ordain a woman to the diaconate. Is this possible?
