There is a public official in my town who allegedly converted to Catholicism in 2002, but has never left the evangelical fundamentalist church he had joined the year before. He identifies himself as a Catholic, but he attends the evangelical church every week. He says he “finds all religions interesting.” He is said to attend Mass as well, before he goes to the other church, but it seems scandalous to me, especially as he is a public official. Is it permissible for a Catholic to be a practicing member of the Protestant Church he “converted” from? He seems to be acting in the belief that all religions are the same… If the Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives, it can’t be okay to worship God in an evangelical church every week, even if Mass has also been attended, can it?
I don’t know if his family also converted, but they used to attend Mass on Saturday evening and all received Communion, but the whole family goes to the protestant church and the kids don’t go to Catholic school or religious education. His “conversion” was rather sudden and was secretly done, so it is unclear if his wife and children also converted.
