Depends on the person. Some people are better at it than others. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that society as a whole is dishonest, though.It seems that society is dishonest how do you decern when u are lied 2 or spin the truth??

I think everyone lives outside the truth in some manner or another, compared to how we’d be in perfect innocence. Just the way we present ourselves can compromise the truth- of who we really are. It’s not easy to always be totally truthful in all ways and it’s been a labor for myself, in fact, to come to respect, then to revere truth, and to increasingly turn from misrepresenting it. And the longer I live the more I’ve come to detest falsehood.It seems that society is dishonest how do you decern when u are lied 2 or spin the truth??
I believe Adam set the course for this; in his act of disobedience he believed a lie instead of believing God. He placed himself outside of reality in that instance; he made himself the determiner of truth, preferring to believe what he wanted, and we’ve been doing that ever since, making up the truth to suit our needs, to justify our actions. And like TheAmazingGrace said, some people are really good at it. I have, however, gotten better, by experience, at discerning when someone is lying or perverting the truth, and of course the more you know a particular person the more their patterns of behavior reveal their character.

Your question reminds me of how St. Francis and his bunch would collaborate on things- questions, concerns, directions to take. They would sit down and pray over things then come back and discuss what God had told each of them in prayer. They would not reach a deliberation until all came together with the same insight after praying- each holding fast to what God had spoken to them, not giving in to peer pressure, but being true to their faith in God, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to them. Eccl 4:12 "And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart. I think we need each other to discern. Our experiences are so varied that we can have a different view- maybe not always wrong, but maybe not right or exact either. It helps to deliberate with other believers and ask their opinions on the matter.
The Holy Spirit, it is said, teaches “all things”. John 14:26 and in 1 John 2:27

Assuming what you are being lied to about is actually your business, the best way to figure out if you are being lied to is to ask questions. If the answers make sense, then it’s probably the truth. If the answers don’t make sense, it’s probably BS. The trick is, figuring out what to do when you believe you are being lied to and that depends a lot on the circumstance. I agree that dishonesty is running rampant in our society and a lot of it is actually people lying to themselves and believing it.

Other posters have offered good observations. As for me, it isn’t the lies that bother me, it’s the half-truths that are more of a problem.It seems that society is dishonest how do you decern when u are lied 2 or spin the truth??

Not always. A couple of times I had to learn the hard way. I was nearly cheated out of a large sum of money by a “Windows” computer guy. I was lucky to have caught on in time.
The fact that I am not familiar with clams or oysters for food was really funny one day. I happened to be in the fish dept. of the grocery, and I picked up a package of clams. The label said “Live clams” on it.
I asked the person working there, "Are they REALLY alive?
She said, “Yes. They are. If you bought any, you should keep them refrigerated.” She went on to tell me more things I did not know.
I said to her, “Are you joking? Is this really true?”
