Can you explain annointing of the sick and forgiveness of sins?

If one receives the Sacrament of the Annointing of the Sick before a major surgery, the Catechism says that any sins he has will be forgiven.

Does this include mortal sins, or should the person still go to confession when able to?

What about the annointing of the sick that is done on first Fridays? Are all sins forgivien too?
