Can you explain purgatory for me?

I have been told all my life that Purgatory is a real place. I have never questioned it until recently. I have now discovered that there is a way to go directly to heaven. I have been told that if i have no mortal sins and i receive the sacrament of the sick on my death bed I can go directly to heaven. Please give me a clear answer on this.
