Can you explain Purgatory & Limbo?

I had a rather heated discussion with a friend about Purgatory. He says a priest told him that the Catholic Church no longer recognizes Purgatory. I told him that he has Purgatory mixed up with the Church’s teaching on “Limbo”. What are the facts?
