Can you explain Purgatory?

Why does the Roman Catholic Church teach the concept of purgatory? On examination of scripture, this appears to clearly be the teaching of a false gospel. I mean no disrespect, but only to challenge a thought process. Sometimes, when so immersed in tradition, we lose humility and begin to lose the concept of God’s divine grace.
