Can you explain the Church's extravagance?

Why does the Catholic church preach about charity and modesty and tithing, but have such expensive and extravagant? If you look at the Pope and the Vatican, there is a lot of Gold, marble, crystal, etc. Why is it that the Catholic church is full of such ornate items, but expects its parishioners to practice charity? It looks hypocritical for the Pope to make this claim, but his church is so extravagant and his jewelry is as well. Please explain this for me.
