Can you give me a brief explanation of Lent?

i am catholic and recently went back to church. i just want a brief explanation of lent and what it means and what you should do, as well as ash wednesday. also, my husband is in rcia and will be recieving the sacraments on easter and at that time we will have our marriage blessed by the father. what do you do at confession? i have not done that for a very long time and i dont want to do it wrong.
