Hello. I was raised in the Methodist church, my grandfather was a minister so we have always been avid churchgoers. I was married and I have two lovely children. The marriage however failed, he was unfaithful with more women than one can imagine and stole money and property from friends, family and employers. Our divorce was finalized in December 2012. A while later I met the man I’m with now, he grew up Catholic. I have contemplated converting to Catholicism many times over the years before even meeting this man. We have been together for 3 years now and there is talk of marriage. I want to convert myself and my two children to Catholicism but it is my understanding that to then get remarried, my first marriage needs to be annulled and therein lies the issue. If I have the previous marriage annulled, my children are then considered illegitimate if I’m not mistaken. I may be putting too much thought into this but it is the one thing holding me back from converting. Any insight into this situation would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

Dear friend,

You ARE (happily) mistaken. A Church annulment has no effect on the civil legitimacy of the children. So, full steam ahead toward an annulment–if that is possible. See your local parish priest about this. You are in our prayers.
