All beleivers have been given the ministry of reconciliation. This ministry includes reconciling man to God --the forgiveness of sins.
How do you reconcile James 5?
That’s not what the bible says.

You must ignore some scriptures to hold the dogma that you hold.

Catholics believe all of the bible.

The Ministry of Reconciliation

11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. [2] The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling [3] the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

I’m speaking specifically about the authority to forgive sins.

This authority was granted to the apostles alone.

Jesus gave his authority to the apostles.

Since he appointed successors, it makes sense that they would use his authority to also appoint successors.

All Christians are not successors of the apostles. We are to follow their traditions and teachings. We are saved through THEIR message.

John 17
Jesus praying for his apostles:

17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Jesus Prays for All Believers
20"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through **their **message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.

How do you reconcile James 5?
Not true. Read the text in context.
18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live.
20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you.
21 Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him."
22 Judas, not the Iscariot, said to him, “Master, (then) what happened that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world?”
23 Jesus answered and said to him, "Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.
24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.
25 "I have told you this while I am with you.
26 The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name–he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I) told you.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.
Who is Jesus talking to? Just the Apostles, not the general public. He also says he will send the Holy Spirit to “remind” them what he had told them already so they will be able to pass it on to future generations. No where does it say that the Holy Spirit will help future generations interpret his teachings.
1 John 5: 15 And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked him for is ours.
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. **There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. **17 All wrongdoing is sin, but **there is sin that is not deadly. **
There is a difference between our bringing a non-deadly sin to the attention of a sinner so he can pray and ask for forgiveness from God. We do not have the authority to forgive or even ask God for the forgiveness of someone elses sin.
Acts 15: 24 Since we have heard that some of our number (who went out) without any mandate from us have upset you with their teachings and disturbed your peace of mind,
25 we have with one accord decided to choose representatives and to send them to you along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
26 who have dedicated their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. and Titus 1:5 For this reason I left you in Crete so that you might set right what remains to be done and appoint presbyters in every town, as I directed you, lastly, James 5: 14 Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.
From these readings you can see that Presbyters (priests) are appointed by the Church and are the only ones with any authority, whether it is to teach, heal, or forgiving of serious sins. Not just anyone has this authority. That is the difference in our priesthood and the priesthood of our older brothers in Christ.

I see that some Protestants are evading the question and diverting the topic towards 1 John. Catholics, please don’t let them evade the question!!! 😃

I have often seen Protestants quote John 14:26

“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

And many of them use this verse to mean that they don’t need any church authority to guide them, but rather the Holy Spirit himself helps them to correctly interpret scripture.

Why don’t they apply the same standard of interpretation to this verse then - John 20:22-23

"And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

It is the same Holy Spirit. If you say that the Holy Spirit enables you to interpret scripture infallibly (John 14:26), then you should also affirm that the Holy Spirit gives you the power to forgive and even retain sins.
Just a clarification. Only because I can see what some here will try and do with this. The power to forgive and retain sins in the broadest sense, was given to the apostles. Not everyone. For example.
  • We can forgive each other for something we do to each other, but I can’t forgive you and you can’t forgive me for what you or I do/did to someone else.
  • We can’t forgive mortal sin.
The power to forgive ALL sins to the fullest, including mortal sin, only comes through the valid ordination into the priesthood.

1 Jn 5, would make no sense if we all had the power to forgive any sin.

James was not writting to the apostles but to common believers.
Jas 5:15 was in the context of calling in the elders (presbyteros) and confessing sins to THEM

πρεσβύτερος presbyteros
among the Christians, those who presided over the assemblies (or churches) The NT uses the term bishop, elders, and presbyters interchangeably

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.

And if you read your Bible you will see that Our Lord only breathed on some one two time in all the bible and this was One of them

In Protestant theology… all sin is mortal apart from Christ.
The quote from 1 Jn 5, is not talking about people who are apart from Christ. Scripture is written in the Church, by the Church, to the Church. Scripture says not all sin is mortal.
2A:
The wages of sin is death… I am familar with 1 John 5, and sin against the Holy Spirit, as well as Hebrews 6. It must be tought to make a distinction between venial and mortal sin, since our hearts our desperately wicked. Sin is of the heart (Jesus’ teaching on aduletery of the heart). What happens if you think you commited a venial sin and actually commited a mortal sin, but never went to confession since you discerned your type of sin incorrectly?
EVERYbody dies. Yet scripture says not all sin leads to death. Obviously death is used in a different context than death of the body.

You’re trying to justify around a very clear passage. Scripture does a good job in numbering many of the mortal sins (sins that will keep you out of heaven if not forgiven)

Do you want the list the scriptures give?

It’s hard to come up with a doctrine from one Bible verse. Here are the verses Protestants use to confess our sin to God. 🙂 I’m not sure if the Catholic Church understands this passage to confessing our sins directly to God, or through a Catholic Priest. Maybe someone can give my the Catholic interpertation of the passage in 1 John?

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. - 1 John
*Dear 2ndAdam,

Why confess your sins to God Who already knows your sins. Saying you’re sorry to God for your sins is like saying you’re sorry for a sin you committed against someone who has recently died. The only one hearing it is God in both cases.

It’s real easy to say to God: “Forgive me oh merciful God.” It’s not so easy to say to another human being I have done this and that. This is why Jesus has us come to the clergy with our sins…so we will accept and own our evil nature. It is hard to tell the truth to another human being about the sometimes horrible things we’ve done.

Accountability is everything. From accountability we receive the gift of Humility, which is the heart of a child. We all know what Jesus said about the eyes of a child. Humility is the key to salvation

Many Catholics leave the Church because of their inability to seek confession as the real deal it is. So go on confessing your sins to God. I’ll continue to take my sins to my local priest who absolves my sins through the mercy of Jesus and permits me to own my sins which helps me not commit them again.

May God bless you.

Ultimately, we both see our source of forgivness to be flowing from Jesus Christ. We repent of our sins, and turn back the Christ through faith.

Not true----- in order to reconcile a non believer to God you must present the gospel message that Jesus saves us from our sins, that he bore our sins on the cross and that God has forgiven us of our sins. Any Christian can lead a nonChristian to Christ, and should. To lead one to Christ is to assure them that their sins have been forgiven.
All disciples have been given the miniwstry of reconciliation. I am a disciple, are you?

Thank you so much, jpaul, for responding in this simple and true way.

The sin of pride keeps many away from the Sacrament of reconciliation. It keeps many Protestants ignoring the Scripture John 20- 21-23:tsktsk: Carlan

do have a question on Catholic life. Do you guys ever confess your sin directly to God? It seems all Christians sin throughout the day; therefore, as a Catholic you would have to spend a lot of time at a Catholic Church

Of course we confess our sins to God. That’s how we know how to confess to the Priest.
In the course of our devotional life, God brings our sins before us and we confess them to God. With this knowledge of our sins we then go to the Priest and in the rite of reconciliation, we confess our sins and receive absolution, just the way Jesus created it.

Here is a bible verse can any one please give me your interpretation and why you get your interpretation,

The verse . When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained
I believe that much discernment from what Jesus says comes through the receiving of the Holy Ghost. The Apostles knew and understood and were given wisdom from God at this time and knew in their hearts beyond the description attainable by words what Jesus meant. The closer you follow Christ, the more he reveals through the Scriptures.

So you are just going to ignore the authority of Our Lord and the apostle teaching You don’t have the authority to ignore the apostle’s teachings. ,You must be one of the pick and choose Christians
So what do you do with James 5?

BTW Are you a disciple of Jesus?

CHESTERTONRULES;5738936:
So you are not a disciple?
I am not an apostle or a successor of the apostles.

All Christians are disciples.

You don’t have the authority to determine Christian doctrine, and neither do I.

We have been instructed to follow those chosen by Jesus and their successors.
