Can you give some info on the prominent red candle in Catholic churches?

I remember hearing when I was a child that it signifies Christ’s presence in the form of consecrated Eucharist. Is this true? Also, is there a special name for this candle? Why red? Any information about its significance would be appreciated.

Hi,

It’s called the sanctuary lamp. It is often red, but does not have to be. It is most often a candle, but can be an oil lamp as well. You are correct. It signifies the sacramental presence of Jesus in the Eucharist which is reserved in the tabernacle.
