Can you give the number and identity of the popes?

Is the number of true popes known? I recall an article recently that quoted a plaque in the Vatican, stating that in one period of history it was impossible to sort out the real popes and the anti-popes, so their numbers and identities are to some extent unknown. If this historical detail is unknown, does it matter? Can it be said that the Holy Spirit will protect the Church from errors in faith and morals, regardless of whether we can sort out the papal lineage precisely?
