my husband of 15 years just recently left me, my two children, and unborn baby for a girl 14 years younger than he. I was confirmed catholic last year at easter. he is a non catholic and our marriage was never blessed. My question is, is it wrong for me to remarry someday? He wants a divorce. I don’t want any of this to be happening but it’s out of my control. He is committing adultry and I have recently learned his girlfriend is pregnant also. I also want to know if I can still recieve communion if I am divorced?

Dear friend,

Our hearts go out to you. Your parish should have had your marriage blessed before receiving you into the Church. But at this point, such an error can work to your advantage. It would appear that after you are divorced you can have that marriage annulled and be free to marry again. Check with your priest on this. Getting divorced will not prevent you from receiving Holy Communion so long as you are celibate and in the state of grace. I am asking all those who read this to keep you and your family in their prayers. I will be praying also. Write again if you need to.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
