Hello, I am a former Catholic… 47 years old raised in Catholic Church by devout Catholic parents and educated in parochial schools. My wife and I left the Catholic church in 2004 (pulled our children - 4 at the time now have a fifth toddler recently adopted from China) and have attended Baptist churches since. The past 3+ years have been spent in considerable study of scripture and participation in adult sunday school classes. While we have learned more about the Christian faith in this short period than we ever did in our parochial schools/Catholic masses, we are beginning to serious question the evangelical movement. In particular, we are coming “back” to the conclusion that our salvation is a combination of our faith (received when we belief in Christ and repent) and our works (our santification and Christian growth that should occur during the course of our life as we endeavor to become more like Christ.
So, again, we’re giving serious thought to a return to and discussion with the local Catholic Church priest as a next step in our walk. While I can see us potentially returning to Catholicism, I see us having a hard time with the issue/area of communion (specifically the doctrine/belief in transubstantiation), non-literal interpretations of the old testament and the focus on praying to the Saints vice Christ alone.
I’d appreciate any suggestions you might have and/or comments re how Catholic church reconciles doctrine that doesn’t seem to be in scripture.
Thanks in advance and God Bless- Louis
