Can you help me explain about confession?

Hello, I had a question about confession. How does a priest cooperate with the forgiveness of sins?? Or what authority does he have and where does this authority come from? Any biblical passages that support this? Please help me. I am talking to a protestant about this and I am trying to explain this to them. Thank you for your time.
