Can you help me explain and defend Purgatory?

Hi, I just joined and I have a question. I’m having an ongoing debate regarding Purgatory with a good non-Catholic Christian fried. She is adamant about the fact that the bible does not say anything about purgatory. That one goes directly to heaven. Can anyone provide a deeper insight from the Catholic perspective? Wherre can I get a book about purgatory?
