Hi,

I was raised catholic but feel away from the church as a teenager.
I was feeling the call to return to the church as a young adult but then the sex scandal fully unfolded - and it has effected me greatly.
I’ve been conflicted for years now, praying to god for guidance but getting no real answer. I’ve looked at every major religion, and there is something about the catholic church that calls me, yet I can’t get over the conflict.
I understand we all sin, but there seems to be a difference between normal human sin which we all struggle with and complete acceptance of evil. When I look at the evidence of what has happened in the church - after reading “Goodbye, good men” and reading the evidence of how the church has covered up the crimes , it seems clear to me that the church itself has been overrun by evil from the lowest priests up to the highest authorities (in the form of a homosexual & liberal culture).

My big issue then, as a lay person I am supposed to submit myself to the authority of the church - recognizing them as my moral authority. But how can this be asked of me when the evidence suggests the church hierarchy have given themselves over so completely to evil? I mean if a Bishop could not see why it was important to protect innocent children and are actively supporting perverts, which is something so obviously wrong to any parent, how can I trust them with anything? These same authorities that are the ones defining church law, which has been changing in a liberal direction from original traditional church teachings - how can one know these teachings are from god and not evil?

Furthermore I now have a 2 year old daughter who has not been baptized in the church, and am feeling guilty on one hand for not providing spiritual guidance, but at the same time fearing that I could be bringing her to darkness just because I was raised by it and it was comfortable to return to that.

Sorry if this sounds dramatic, but it’s how I feel.
Was just hoping to get another perspective on that.

Thank you

Hi,

The Church is very human as such evil demonstrates, but is also quite holy as all the saints it has produced demonstrate. The very passion and death that our Blessed Lord endured testifies to the reality of evil. But His death and resurrection testify to His power over evil. He was quite aware of St. Peter’s weakness. Yet He deliberately chose him to be the leader and rock on which He founded His Church. The glory of the Church lies precisely in this: that He didn’t die for the perfect, but for sinners. Our hope of eventual union with Him rests on this. He came for sinners like you and me------and for the sinners that you have cited. There is still hope that they will repent and seek His forgiveness.

We need to remember the martyrdom of the deacon Stephen under the approval of Saul. Yet today they are Saint Stephen and Saint Paul. The Lord isn’t finished with any of us yet. But we do need to trust Him and the only Church He ever founded.

I advise you to stop waiting to trust Him and just do it! You are in my prayers.
