Can you help me refute iconoclasm?

I’ve heard some Fundamentalists argue that praying in front of statues is a form of idolatry, and I wanted to use Numbers 21:9 (the bronze serpent) as one example of prayer via (but not to) statues in the Old Testament. However, I am awful at words. Could you point me to somewhere where this has already been made?
