Can you help me resolve having offended a Catholic friend?

I’m not sure if an “apologist” is what I need. I tried finding out what one was, but Webster’s didn’t have a definition.

I attempted finding answers to some of my questions on this site, but there is so much info here which goes off in so many directions when I look at the many threads. Since I spend most of my time online trying to help a loved one through the horrors of dementia, I cannot spend much time here researching.

I’m curious about some Catholic rituals and practices. As a non-denominational Christian, I have spent much time reading the Bible. I’m a rebel at heart, and will challenge anyone (even my own pastor) if I’m told to accept something not backed up by God’s Word.

Years ago I was helping a friend with a college paper and discovered that Protestants and Catholics have different “10 Commandments.” Protestants’ tenth is “Thou shalt have no graven images before me,” while Catholics’ tenth is a repetition of the ninth, “Thou shall not covet …” It was a reference to this which caused me to offend a fellow Christian, who happens to be Catholic.

Can you explain this to me? I’m sincerely curious about this and would like someone schooled in theology of the Catholic Church to help me understand this, and probably a few other things.

I don’t promise to agree with anything you share, but I do promise to keep an open mind.

Hi Teri,

An apologist is one who defends and explains.

This link and the one it offers should give you the reason for the difference. Feel free to write again.
