Can you help me respond to allegations about the Church and slavery?

I am interested in answering a letter to the editor in our local newspaper, submitted by a dissedent Catholic priest. This is his second letter; both basically question the moral authority of the Church in a broad sense in order to defend the homosexual movement and to pressure the Church to change in this area. One issue he used today to undermine the Church is that of slavery- he asserts that the Church used to approve it and now condemns it. I am interested in submitting a strong reply which freely and frankly incorporates history and past teachings, hopefully undermining his general credibility with a really good treatment of this one issue.
