My wife and I are about to have our first child. I am Catholic and my wife is non-denominational. She is fine with having our son baptized in the Catholic Church, but she does not want any of my family to be the godparents, she wants the Church to provide a sponsor couple instead. Also, she does not want the godparents to hold our son during the baptism. I must admit that I am unfamiliar with the rubrics for baptism. I was hoping someone could explain to me the significance of the godparents holding our child and any help with choosing godparents. Thanks and God bless.

Hi,

There is no problem with asking the priest to provide Godparents. It is actually more appropriate for a parent to hold the child since it is the parents who will be the principal teachers of the faith to the child. The Godparents merely assist them.
