I have always wondered this; maybe you can answer this for me:
I have 2 children (ages 7 and 8) with psychological dx of mental difficulties, add/hd and mild autism. They are high funcioning and very smart but they are physically all over the place and impulsively touch things or impulsively run off etc…I want to take them with the family every Sunday but some times this proves too difficult for everyone involved for a number of reasons. They need medicine to focus and sit still, and manage their moods/outbursts, otherwise they will be literally climbing the walls or running up and down the aisles…even with medicine sometimes they are unable to sit at all. I feel despite their difficulties that I still have the obligation as a parent to instruct them in their faith etc as much as possible…but when I bring them to mass even in the crying room they are a distraction to others and I don’t think its fair to others to bring them. So what I typically do is bring them every other week. Don’t know if this is ok or not…?
This year they will both be in CCD and making their communion…I am planning on attending classes with them so as help ensure the teacher isn’t overwhelmed.
So my question is once they make their communion, are they required to attend mass every week or would be ok to let them stay home sometimes if I know they are having a rough day…?
I really don’t know the requirements for such children.
