Here are the facts. My wife was raised and baptized in the Catholic Church. I was raised primarily in the Baptist church. We were married in the Baptist church and attended it for 20 years. After much study I converted Catholicism two years ago. During RCIA our priest told me there were no issues regarding our marriage. Recently at confession at a different parish, my wife was told by a priest we needed to be re-married within the church and we were in a state of mortal sin if we were having sex. Need help soon. She “cut me off” until I can resolve this. Have tried contacting local priests but can’t get return calls or emails.

Dear friend,

I don’t know what that first priest was thinking. Your confessor was correct. Since your wife was a baptized Catholic, attempting to marry outside the Catholic Church rendered the marriage invalid.

If you can’t get through to your priest, go to a parish where you get response and register in that parish and consider it your parish. If you need further help, feel free to contact me privately by clicking under my name above. You are in my prayers.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
