Can you help with this matter of a civil marriage and our desire for a Church marriage?

Im divorced, my marriage was a civil marriage. My friend says I can’t remarry in a catholic church. Is that true? Also, can two divorced people who were never married in the Catholic church have a church wedding? both of us are Catholic and are Baptized in the faith.
 
Hi,

The Catholic Church does recognize the marriages between non-Catholics as valid. It does NOT recognize marriages of Catholics married outside of the Catholic Church. So your civil marriage cannot be valid. But the marriage tribunal of your diocese will have to review it to objectively ascertain that it is not valid. Your priest can send in the necessary information to the tribunal. It appears that both of you will have to have this done. Then you both will be able to be married in the Catholic Church.
