Can you help with this Mormon's quandery: why are we here?

Greetings,

I am a Mormon who has been considering conversion to the Roman Catholic Church for quite some time now. Along the way I have come up with a variety of questions, some which have been answered, some which have not. The biggest questions I currently have are: Why are we here? Why didn’t God fore go the creation of the earth and simply create us along side him in heaven so evil, suffering, and potential damnation could be avoided?

If we were God, we would make things so easy—we think. But we are not God and must try to think outside the human box—because God certainly does! The Catholic Church has always taught that we are here to love God as much as we can and that God allows evil that a greater good can come from it. When we struggle against evil because we love God, our loves grows stronger than it would have if we hadn’t put forth such effort. It is His will that we love Him as much as we can because this will give us a greater appreciation of Him in heaven—which is the best thing He can do for us.
