I was baptised a Roman Catholic at birth and have been brought up more or less within the Church and her traditions. However, i’ve always had trouple getting my head around the concept of Purgatory, although i believe it exsists. I have heard it said that it is “a place of temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven” (i’m not sure if i quoted this correctly so, forgive me).

My question is, if our sins have been forgiven through the Sacrament of Confession, why do we need to be punished furthur? Dosn’t being forgiven mean that there is no longer any punishment due? Why would God forgive us if He was only going to punish us anyway? I have also heard it said that Purgatory is the place where we go before heaven to be purified of the after effects of our sin, so even though God forgives me of my sin, those i may have wronged in the process of my sin have not been compensated, and therefore, i must be purified.
