Can you please help? Is this a valid reason to miss Mass tomorrow

On Thursday, I was sick in bed with a fever of 100… and am recovering from what I think was the flu. It is now Saturday evening, and I am better. But not 100% well.

I am not running a fever (so, I guess… no longer contagious)… but do have quite a bad cough. I am afraid that my cough will disrupt the Mass… and that I will have to step outside, leaving my elderly mother alone in the pew.

Is this a valid reason to miss Mass on Sunday? It isn’t really sickness… but recovery from sickness. Valid? Or not? Thanks and God bless.

Imo, you should say home and rest. You’re probably still very vulnerable to picking up new germs and ending up with something else.

I think (not sure) that you are still slightly contagious at this point.
 
I don’t know what the climate is like in your neck of the woods, but, if it’s really cold/rainy/snowy, your best bet is to stay at home. As masondoggy said, you’re still vulnerable and your immune system has just taken a hit. If you have a Daily Roman Missal, try to catch the EWTN broadcast and pray along with the Mass. Spend some extra time in prayer and offer up your sufferings to the Lord.

Remember: next week marks the most important and holiest part of the Church year, Holy Week. Save your strength and gear up.

Thanks for the answers, folks. I had a bad night, coughing… and continue to cough a lot… this morning. So, I think staying home is the right thing to do.

I guess I was feeling guilty (and non-sensible 😊) about missing Mass today… because I was forced to do some grocery shopping yesterday. My 85 year old mother and I are alone here, and have no one to pick up groceries when I’m sick. She has Alzheimer’s, and can’t drive.

Thanks for bringing me to my senses! I want to be well for Holy Week and Easter! God bless.
 
The question that you should ask YOURSELF is whether or not you would go to other places (work, school, an expensive show that you already purchased tickets for, etc.) feeling the way that you do.

If you would go to any of these other places, then you should also go to mass.
 
Remember those that would sit near you and be kind. No matter where feel you should go, school, work or Mass spreading the germs is never a kindness. You don’t know if others might become gravely ill from a simple virus. How would you feel if someone that felt like you sat beside you elderly mother?

I will pray that you get better and can attend Mass later this week. 🙂

I agree with this in part, we should make an effort to attend mass. HOWEVER, far too many people report to work when ill and spread their germs to others. People feel a lot of pressure to show up for work and will do so if they can manage based on how they feel, not considering if they infectious to others, or will hamper their own recovery by getting back too quickly. Mass has many elderly people, babies, and persons with compromised immune systems attending. More so than the average work place I would think, another reason for caution. Both my children have weak immune systems due to chronic illness, people can be so inconsiderate, coughing in their faces and
putting used tissues on the pew, even if they pick them up later. UGH.

Getting on my soapbox, but please don’t expose others by being overly scrupulous.
 
Our parish has a “cry” room on one side in the back and a “sick” room on the other side in the back where folks with colds are asked to sit in consideration of not spreading germs to others.

There is NOTHING more important to my mother and me… than the Mass. Work, school, an “expensive show” or event which I have purchased tickets for. If I could make it to any of those… I would certainly make it to Mass. The Holy Mass is our “lifeblood”. Which is why I posted the question. I was truly upset and confused about whether or not… I should have attended… yesterday… in my condition. I believe that (with your wise opinions) I made the correct decision in not going. As of this morning, I am still quite “under the weather”. But hope to be well by Palm Sunday and Holy Week.

Some people do end up going to work, sick… because they simply can’t afford to not work. This is sad… but true.

The idea of a “sick” room (like a “crying room”), at Mass… sounds good on the surface. However, even if our parish had one (which it does not)… it would not have been an option for me… as I can’t leave my mother alone. She has Alzheimer’s. And it wouldn’t be a good idea to place an elderly person with you, in the “sick room”. The “sick room” wouldn’t work for parents with young kids, either… unless they have a healthy spouse or grandparent with them… to sit outside with the kids.

This kind of situation is really left to your own judgment, however, I strongly encourage you to find a Confessor/Spiritual Father to develop a relationship with so that you can rely on his guidance in these situations, rather than us faceless internet types.
