Hi, I am a faithful Catholic who loves the Church and all Her teachings, but am now struggling with mormonism. I am just lured to the lds church and I do not know why. I know the saying that the “enemy” camp may be luring and very attractive, but I have still been struggling with it. If you please help me with some apologetics on the subject it would be greatly appreciated. (I do not want any hateful and uncharitable remarks from LDS memebers and other memebers if argument sparks =)
Thanks and God Bless!

I was raised LDS, all of my immediate family are Mormons. I was received into the Catholic Church at Easter 2008.

So, what’s up? What questions are you mulling over?

mainly their claims about joseph smith, the book of mormon, and especially their wanting you to read it and then you shall know for sure that its true. =)

Of course, Mormons present it that way because they are trying to convert you. The catch is, if you don’t “know for sure that it’s true”, they’ll tell you that you aren’t sincere enough in your search for truth.

This is made in conjunction with efforts to get you to commit. To reading their book, to going to their Sunday service, to baptism (6 weeks from now). In other words, from their view, there is only one “right” answer and they’ll work on you until you “get it”.

Slow it down. Stop and think what is luring you, why. Keep your eye on Christ, who He is, and don’t assume that Mormons believe the same about Him. (They don’t.)

Read Galatians 1:6-9

Pray to be protected from what is false.

I will, thank you so much RebeccaJ. God Bless you and Keep you! =)

No problem. 🙂 You can PM me as well as asking your questions here.

Peace be with you.

Generally speaking, every religion has what its followers deem to be sacred writings. There is nothing that the Mormons claim about the Book of Mormon that other people don’t claim about their own religious text. For example, a Muslim would also say about the Koran, “Read it and then you shall know for sure that its true.” But even though all these people make the same claim about their sacred writings, these sacred writings can’t all be true (at least in the sense that they contain many elements which contradict one another, and truth can’t contradict itself). Therefore, the test for truth has to something more than an individual simply reading a book with the expectation of some kind of guaranteed truth discerning enlightenment.

Also it may be helpful to read the various tracts by Catholic Answers considering Mormon beliefs, the links for which can be accessed from: catholic.com/library/noncatholic_groups.asp
