Can You Pray Directly To God?

Can you pray directly to God the Father without saying the Our Father, or does it have to go through Jesus? Or something like that? Can someone clarify this for me? Does God the Father hear our prayers when we pray? Or can we only pray to Jesus?
 
Yes, we can pray directly to God the Father. Many Catholics begin their prayers “In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit”, but you can pray specifically to Jesus, or the Father, or the Holy Spirit.

Why would we only be able to pray to Jesus? :confused:
 
The title of this forum really “struck” me because I not only pray directly to God I “talk” to Him all the time because He lives with me. He has been living with me for several years because I am all alone, except for God. My husband passed away over 9 years ago and my children and grandchildren live a long distance from me. My problem is that I’ve started thinking that – perhaps I should LISTEN to God in addition to “talking” to Him – anyone have any ideas??? Let me know –
 
of course you can pray directly to God the Father!

the “Our Father” is one such prayer. it is not the ONLY such prayer!!! most of teh psalms are prayers directly to God… you may pray to God whenever you wish, in fact its strongly encouraged!

the Our Father is a very useful blueprint for prayer, however.
Our Father (to whom)
Who art in heaven (not your mom and dad, your heavenly father)

Hallowed be Thy name (praise)
Thy Kingdom come (fervently to be desired)
Thy Will be done (not mine, Lord, but Yours)
on earth as it is in Heaven (here and now)

Give us this day our daily bread (help us with our immediate needs )

forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us (forgive me, Lord, a sinner… and help me to forgive others and be forgiving)

lead us not into temptation (save us from the time of trial! help us avoid sin!)
but deliver us from evil (save us from the snares of the Devil and from the fires of hell)

Amen

so i know i need to be clear who i am talking to… give praise and Thanksgiving my FIRST priority, before i go asking for more stuff, i should be grateful for what i have…
i may ask for anything but ask that it is “the Lords will, not my own”
and i will be given in measure as i give. forgiven as i forgive… etc.

and then i ask for help leading a virtuous life (cause i sure cant do it alone) and protection from evil.

its not only a complete prayer by itself… but a blueprint!
mind you, that doesnt mean you end up following it exactly, its just a good design…

Jesus IS God–God incarnate.

And to add to that, isn’t the Father God and the Holy Spirit God?. When we address prayers to one member of the Godhead all three hear them - ONE God in three persons, not three Gods. Any prayer to Jesus is a prayer to the Father is a prayer to the Holy Spirit.

The best advice I ever got on this is that God gave us two ears and one mouth and we should strive to use them in the same ratio (that is, listen twice as much as we talk).
 
When we pray to Jesus, we are praying to God the father and the Holy spirit becuase they are one. Even when you are praying to the Father it will go thru Jesus first. So no matter how bad you just want to pray to God directly it will be becuase the Holy spirit moved you to pray and it was jesus who showed you the father.
 
This is a reply to “The Doctor” – I truly appreciate your recommendation that I “listen” to God more than I “talk” - (pray) to Him – I will try to remembeer this advice and also will definitely “listen” to His advice – I truly need it a/c sometimes I feel “sorry” for myself – many thanks for your advice
