Can You PROVE Creationism?

This is FAST turning into an argument intended simply to debunk evolution, and not prove creationism, but I’ll bite… L

Life develops complexities in order to adapt. The world is not complex because of how it was designed or something, it is complex because life needs to adapt.

All life develops the characteristics it needs to fulfill its needs. These mutations and characteristics of animals/plants affect other animals’/plants’ abilities to survive, so they in turn adapt, and so on. Account for various other reasons for mutations (climate, terrain, plant life, etc.) and you get very complex and varied life.
See, there it is, just like I said. Everything apparently irreducibly complex really just evolved into complexity because otherwise we would have no life. How? It just happened for “various reasons” none of which answer problems of design complexity. This is supposed to be a logical answer, but instead it’s just blind faith in nothing. It’s an unscientific answer.

Actually life adapts through developing complexities. The complexites that are benificiaial are the ones that are passed on to the next generation. This is Natural Selection.

May all you creationists take note that ‘selection’ indicates the oppisite to ‘random chance’

With every post you illuminate the you don’t know as much as you think you do. From your OP, this is demonstrated. For example: scientific theories don’t prove, they explain. As such creation can’t be “proven”. Furthermore, scientific theories are not “believed” or “disbelieved.” They are either accepted or rejected, based on evidence. The way I see it, until evolution can explain a structure with 40 unique proteins can develop gradually, or how proteins can be synthesized only in the presence of DNA, mRNA, and tRNA, when these are large proteins themselves (where did these things come form anyways?) you eill never convince me of anything.
I’m not really trying to convice you of anything, simply defending evolution when you attack it, trying to get you to think. I wanted to hear evidence for Creationism, not lack of evidence for evolution…

And scientific theories can be proven. At one time, the now totally accepted scientific fact that the sun is at the center of the solar system was just a scientific theory. Would you argue that with me? I hope not. Scientific theory becomes scientific fact. Sure, I could be wrong… but the liklihood of evolution is so high, it is accepted as a fact, at least microevolution. Macro needs a bit of shaping up here and there, some holes to fill, but the framework is there. The Big Bang is all but proven to have happened, but perhaps it happened a bit differently than we currently think. I don’t know, but I’m sure in time, with science, I will.

Glad I keep seeing interesting posts from all of you, keep them coming, but let’s try to get back to the main question posed. Not one of you has really answered it yet. Most of you have just tried to pick apart evolution.

Peace

No scientific theory may ever be “proven” because it has to be open to being wrong. This is Bio 101. So as it stands, your OP is invalid.

All science can do is disprove. If a hypothesis is not disproven enough, it can become a theory. If a theory cannot be disproven, it becomes a Law. Hence, we have a theory of evolution but a law of gravity

I love how “science” people say “you must Proove God” when “science” people should be saying “let me disprove God”

Hey,

I understand why you hold the position you do on God, Bob Crowley. I respect that. As I said, I was sure you had a good reason. Regardless of why I might believe you saw what you saw, felt what you felt, etc., I understand these events in your life were very formative experiences, and respect that. While we are talking about dogma for the most part in this thread, I really for the most part have no deal with anyone as long as they give back to the world.

I disagree with your positions of God dogma wise, but DO agree with your philosophy and thought, I think.

CWBetts, I was referring to carbon dating not as the ONLY source of data but as an important one.

East Anglican, I have no issue with your response. I wish more people would think that way.

I’m getting better with using names instead of saying “guy”, huh?

What’s REALLY important in life is philosophy, I understand that, live by that, and value philosophy more than science. I know I will NEVER be a scientist, never prove anything, never directly observe science but in books. I know science is real, I mean, that’s not a very big leap of faith for me, and it shouldn’t be for most, but I live on Earth, and must above all else try to improve society, regardless of my beliefs in science or religion. I live life on EARTH, in a human society, not in space, watching the Universe from above.

So, this thread is about science and religion. Let’s keep the focus on that. Again, I COULD start a thread on philosophy if you’d like!

Peace!

I probably won’t make many more contributions to this post, as there are others quite capable of doing so. However I will comment on your attitude to “philosophy”. Early in my Christian life, I too thought Philosophy was important. In an academic sense I suppose it is. But as my old pastor commented, the Philosophy of Christians is summed up in “Christ”. And in that respect the foolishness of God is stronger than human wisdom.

Secondly if there is a stream of philosophy that is most closely related to Christianity, I think it would be “existentialism”, of which Soren Kierkegaard was the prime mover. After all most people basically “exist” when it is all said and done. And that’s about all. 300,000 people were wiped out with the tsunami in 2004, and most of them, to us, were completely unknown. But they existed. 2000 or so died in 9/11, and the same comment applies.

And within that existential framework, they make their decisions, including the realm of faith. Individually, one by one. And for most people, that is about the be and end all of philosophical relevance.

I’ll also give you one more little story of non-natural origin. I see a Catholic psychiatrist, basically for depression. It’s more psychotherapy now, or jaw-boning if you like. But I was on Prozac for 10 years, at his recommendation. However we also share similar spiritual experiences. I told him once of two occasions where a voice cut clear across my thoughts, once dealing with a crush I had on a particular lady, and the other dealing with my frustration in vocational satisfaction.

He then replied, “Did I tell you my little story?” He was sitting in his office just typing on his computer, when a voice just suddenly said “Go to Maclean!” No reason, no explanation, just 3 abrupt words. SInce no details were given, there wasn’t much he could do except note it. But about two months later he was at a town called Lismore in Northern New South Wales (Australia). He gets involved in family healing masses. On this occassion, an aboriginal woman came up to him afterwards and said, “I don’t want to sound silly, or interfere, but I seem be getting told you should go to Maclean.”

Now if an aboriginal woman (or any person for that matter) just came up to you out of the blue, and made a statement like that, you’d want a pretty good reason before you took any notice. But since he’d been PRIMED by the voice in the office two months before, he went. He ended up on an island in one of the rivers nearby which had been used in the early days of settlement as a lock-up for aboriginal prisoners. There seemed to be some spiritual business which had to be sorted out and that was the reason for his going.

The night my father died, which I told you about earlier, he at one stage said, “You’ll meet a pastor. You’ll think he’s great, but all he’ll do is discourage you even more.” I met the pastor about four years later. About 8 or nine years after that, I sat in the pastor’s office to have him say, “I owe you an apology. You needed encouragement, but all I’ve done is to discourage you even more!” I’d mentioned my father’s death night appearance to him a number of times, and I think he was bit dubious about it. But he got a shock when I told him about my father’s prediction referring specifically to him 12 or 13 years before.

There’s a spiritual world out there all right. One of the reasons the human race hardly gets a chance to settle down is the fact that the devil exists, and we’re caught in the battle between him and God. Thus from 1914 to today we have World War I, brief hiatus then Great Depression, World War II and the Cold War. The Wall comes down, and amidst the rejoicing and the New World Order predictions, there is a Gulf War and a Bosnian Conflict. They die away, and there’s 9/11 and the rise of Muslim fundamentalism.

So what’s next? I know this much - we’re not in control, even though we ***think ***we are.

You’re right, but it is foolish to say that when something is all but proven/disproven by science, that you don’t believe it. Sure, the sky could be a floodgate, and the Earth could be the center of the Universe… but the odds are so unlikely, that it is all but impossible these are the cases.

You can deny everything and anything, from evolution or God, to the existence of other human beings, to the Universe. It could not be disproven by science that the Universe is not just a dream. You could never test it, because all your tests would, in theory, be meaningless due to the possiblilty the Universe was a dream of yours (NOTE: Before moving on, I know that this theory has no scientific basis, BUT, it fits with your principal you described above, and is the only principal I have seen that is able to “proove” creationism, or “disprove evolution”, as well as the one you just tried to use… Similar stuff follows…) Same with God. I could never disprove him using science, because even if I found no proof of his existence or proof of his nonexistence, he might be hiding himself from me. I could prove with science that there is no God (or rather, disprove God), and you could say that’s all due to God wanting me to think that. I could never disprove that. So, with evolution, sure, God could just want us to believe it, you can’t disprove that. So in theory, that would disprove evolution. Of course, the same principal also disproves existence, and in fact, the existence of God himself. Perhaps the Flying Spaghetti Monster just wants us to believe in God… Anything is possible in theory. Does everything happen? Most likely not.

A summary: Microevolution and macroevolution are not disproven but by God hiding something from us, or not revealing himself thouroughly (well Macroevolution is revised time to time, the general framework of the theory has been layed down). By this principal, you might not exist, and God might not exist. Meaning, I could claim you aren’t real, and you could never disprove me. By the science you described, everything I could imagine might be real, and/or false is scientific law.

So for life to make more sense science has to both prove and disprove. In general, science is observed, then proven via testing of a hypothesis, then called a theory due to its ability to potentially be disproven or altered. If it a theory is determined to be completely true with no chance of being disproven, as is mostly the case with only the very foundations of science, such as gravity, it becomes a law, a rule to follow when considering further scientific expiriments. So, would you argue with the Theory of Relativity, even though it has been proven 99.99% to be true? Same with evolution. There is no real scientific evidence disproving it, only pointing out holes in it. I refer to both micro and macroevolution. Once all the holes are filled, these theories become laws. I can’t be sure, but I believe due to scientific fact and history that in time, science will prove the general framework of macroevolution is correct. Just as Copernicus and Galileo proved the Earth was not the center of the Universe.

Peace!

That’s what I was going to say. The Scientific Method is not of much use when it comes to God and creation.

You seem to be unable to hear what I am saying. Catholics do not have to (and by and large do not) hold to the LITERAL meaning of the Bible. We do not have to accept that the sky was a floodgate, the earth as the center of the universe, or the 6 day creation. In other words, your position is flawed from the start.

Are you a scientist by training?

And, if you read what I say, I have no issue with evolution. In fact, I hold to it for the most part. My issue is that since you cannot disprove the uncreated Creator, you must accept it as a possibility.

I exist because I exist. It is you that I am unsure of. Because that paradox exists between all of us, either all of us exist or none of us do.

Science might do a lot of things. Again, you need to revise your position. Catholics do not have to deny evolution. What science needs to understand is that if it cannot test or disprove, by its own process, it must accept as a posibility.

Please learn the Catholic postition on Evolution. Please. I think it would help you in your discussions.

I was simply using examples. I know you do not believe in a floodgate for a sky, or that Earth is at the center of the Universe. What I was establishing was, that by the very same principle that many (Not necessarily you) use to justify or even prove God, many other quite odd things are also possible, or even “proven”, by extremely twisted logic.

So if God is a possibility, so must be the FSM, Russel’s teapot, etc. In fact, if he’s real, than as you said (I am aware of that paradox 😉 ) nothing, everything, no one, and everyone may not exist or exist. Anything you imagined to be real or unreal could potentially be the case, if you can’t entirely disprove it. I know the FSM is not likely real. You will agree with me, right? Well, the FSM is in essence “God”, if not the God you believe in. It is unfair to say that God is real and the FSM is not. Both are invisible, and unable to be tested.

Believing something only makes it PHILOSOPHICALLY real, not scientifically real. God is a scientific possibility, but only definitely real in your “soul”. So if God IS scientifically real only in theory, than Zeus, Vishnu, the FSM, the Invisible Pink Unicorn, and every other conceivable deity must be. If God is but a possibility, you must respect all other possibilities, unless you are attempting to prove him, which you admit is impossible.

But I really have no issue with your position on science. This is turning into a debate more about God than science.

I was just putting out my position, as you did yours. You should keep an open-mind, not necessarily to becoming some sort of agnostic or whatever, but rather to how others think, comprehend. To you, God might be entirely reasonable. I’m sure you have your reasons, and respect that. I’m just expressing my beliefs as you are. I’m just trying to disprove a deity, while you try to prove one. It is unfair to not grant me that privilege when you have it 🙂

We will never convice each other I’m sure of what we believe about God. That’s fine 😉

If there is a God, may he keep you all happy and well!
Peace,

EDIT: I do know the OFFICIAL Catholic stand, but there are many Catholics who believe in Creationism. I posted this thread on this forum expecting more intelligent responses. I have been getting them so far, I think.

You must first define the origin of life since evolution does not address that and without that scientifically proven origin you cannot begin to explain your evolutionary theory scientifically.

Evolution has major holes so you can’t expect to define the argument in a way you cannot support yourself.

You give your own proof to what you reject.

Good luck with that origin of life.

Well put.

I was wondering what the OP meant by ‘scientific’. Most, if not all ‘proof’ for evolution really isn’t science, it’s interpretation of data in the present.

“Selection” implies intelligence; “randon chance” implies no intelligence needed (dumb luck).

Observation points to God selecting.

Alright… I’m getting sick of all the posts simply attacking evolution. LACK OF PROOF FOR EVOLUTION DOES ABSOUTELY NOT PROVE CREATIONISM!!!

Give me evidence for Creationism, quit bashing evolution. I could care less what kind it is. Evolution is accepted by most/all scientists as real. What I am asking is for you to present evidence for Creationism. There must be some sort of positive evidence, meaning, I don’t want to hear “We’ve never observed…” “This never could have…” etc. You can use such statements but only after presenting some sort of “positive” evidence. Evolution has “Postitive” evidence, like “These fossils show…” “This gene does…” “This mutation means…”… Give me THAT! Positive evidence for Creationism. If you don’t understand, ask me for clarification. All further posts simply refuting Evolution will be ignored in general by me from now on. If too many conversations start from anti-evolution statements, I’ll go start a new thread somewhere else.

I want to hear your opinions. I’m sure at least ONE of you out there has a scientific mind to some degree and believes themselves to have proof of Creationism.

Peace

I have brought up irreducible complexity, which you ignored.

I actually did talk about irreducible complexity a bit. Remember? I talked about how life adapts and everything. One animal adapts so it has an edge, another adapts so it can survive the other animal having an edge, etc. Soon enough, you get a very complex food chain. Life is complex by necessity. Every different species needs a way to deal with other animals as well as their environments. They adapt or die. If you remove a piece it falls apart, true, but the food chain is a result of animals adapting to fill gaps in it, not animals being created into it (I guess that’s a possibility, though scientifically unlikely).

Let’s get back to the OP.

I find no evidence that snakes have vocal chords or the gene for language. The only creature we have found with these things apart from ourselves is Neanderthal man.

If you have any evidence that sugest otherwise please share it with us.

Dogs understand commands but their language abillity is not enough for them to have a conversation about fruit.

That is hardly sufficient. Score 1 for intelligent design

I’m no scientist, check this out. talkdesign.org/faqs/icdmyst/ICDmyst.html

If I’m right (I looked into it more) irreducible complexity states that life is far too complex for it to have evolved into the form it is in from primitive cells some 3.6 billion years ago. Evolution is very flexible, due to the ease with which DNA mutates, etc. You really have to underestimate it QUITE a lot to believe irreducible complexity. Today there are small lasting multi-generational physical mutations observed in animals and men. I’m no scientist, I can’t explain Evolution better than one. Check out the link. Irreducible Complexity is considered pseudoscience.
