I have gotten conflicting answers on this.

EWTN says no.

Catholic Answers says no.

However, exorcist Father Jose Antonio Fortea says yes.

Who is right and who is wrong? Also, can I get an apologist here to discuss?

No

Well, he’s wrong. Honestly, I’ve Never heard of him. Regardless, he’s, according to a link on Wikipedia, no longer presiding over Exorcisms.

I cannot understand being inquisitive about this subject. How is this edifying to anyone’s faith?

You can’t, but it’s still a sin to try.

The idea of ‘selling’ your soul is a fantasy, never happened. Also, that’s not the way the devil operates. If a person’s attitude and way of life already shows a rejection to God, the devil does not have to do anything there and moves on to try and tempt a faithful person.

Exorcist Fr. Malachi Martin claimed many times that this could be done and does indeed happen. Not to get too graphic, but there are a wide array of magical ceremonies with recourse to demons. These ceremonies sort of “shoehorn” one into committing further acts of mortal sins in which Lucifer gets a soul. There are also particular ceremonies where he can be conjured.

No, because your soul is not yours to sell. It belongs to God, who made you.

Often times “famous” exorcists will say things, or have things attributed to have been said by them. that are hyperbole.

Stick with the documents of the Church.

Good priest told me that “The Rite” is the most accurate book if you want to read about exorcism. (NOT speaking of the movie, never saw it). The take away from it was that staying close to the Sacraments is the key. Do not choose grave sin. There is a line about people wanting something exciting, for someone to say in order to keep the devil away you have to swing a dead chicken around your head. That it is so much more simple. Resist the Devil and he will flee from you, go to Confession when you do choose sin, receive the Eucharist.

@InternalRhyme

i don’t know about selling the soul to the devil ,but came across the pack with the devil it could be

Sister Magdalena of the Cross -The devil’s saint for 40 years & her escape from an evil pact through extraordinary repentance

The November 24, 2011 prosecution of the false Italian mystic, Mother Ebe Giorgini, foundress of the religious movement “La Pia Unione di Gesù Misericordioso”, once again brings to light the importance of careful discernment when it comes to mystics, visionaries and the like, and calls to mind the incredible life story of the false mystic, Sr. Magdalena of the Cross (1487-1560).

This is true, and one can become oppressed, but the concept of “selling your soul” is counterproductive. Jesus already paid the price for our souls, and there is no ceremony, ritual, conjuring or shoehorn that will result in “Lucifer getting a soul” besides final impenitence.

I have talked with no small number of people who believe they “sold their soul” and are in the ownership of the devil. Such a concept just presents roadblocks to repentance and restoration.
These ceremonies sort of “shoehorn” one into committing further acts of mortal sins
It is a fact that mortal sins, and the compounding of them, causes enslavement to sin. But while a soul is still on this earth, that enslavement can be broken and the soul restored to a state of grace.
particular ceremonies where he can be conjured.
As dangerous as these are to the soul, such things are not more powerful than the shed blood of Christ on the cross.

No because that would imply it is an action that can’t be undone or forgiven and Jesus says there is only one sin that can’t be forgiven, Sinning Against the Holy Spirit and this isn’t that. That sin is after seeing God revealed to you, you reject this shown truth and therefore claim sin completely. This can’t be forgiven because you literally saw and chose not to believe.

If you could “sell” your soul, this would be an unforgivable action since the soul wouldn’t be yours anymore, but the soul isn’t neccessarily even ours to “sell” if we could. So this is a moot point.

Simply, no you can’t sell your soul. But if you tried to that’s still grave sin - but it is forgivable in confession. However, you can seriously damage your soul and rupture the connection with God (mortal sin) by being part of satanic acts, such as black masses and such. But again, this is forgivable, though extremely grave sin.

Being possessed by the devil is not the same as selling your soul and the theological logic I use is the fact that only one sin can be forgiven and if this selling was possible, it by definition couldn’t be forgiven

When you think about it, we make an agreement with the devil every time we choose sin and reject God. I’ve chosen sin and rejected God, repented and He has forgiven me.

This. You can choose to follow the devil, but you can also choose to return to God at any time. The warning, however, is that it is not as easy to leave the devil’s temptations behind as one thinks. There have been many, many cases where people played the “I’ll just dabble and then pray really hard to God and put the devil’s things aside” who miscalculated badly. Remember, God’s grace is perfect but our will to follow Him, particularly when we like the side effects of not following Him, is not. Do not presume to lean on your own strength to resist the devil.

That’s all true.

You really can sell your soul. Have you heard of Lady Gaga and her experience with this?

Please provide Church Teaching, an encyclical, a quote from OTTs Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, the Catechism, Canon Law, some declared teaching document, that one can sell one’s soul.

Lady GaGa is a talented musician, but, she does not speak from a position of authority on the Church and Doctrine.

I think that this is mostly just a literary device. We all know people who have betrayed their principles or done horrible things for personal gain, and that this has a lasting unforeseen spiritual impact on them. But there is nothing God cannot ultimately undo for those who honestly seek Him.

The novel Prisoners of War by Sarah Gracia features a character with OCD who is afraid of selling her soul.

It’s a big issue for Catholics with OCD. I’m not shying away from difficult subjects for their sake.

The exorcist is WRONG. It is impossible to sell your soul to the devil.
It is an infallible teaching of the Church that we have until our dying breath to repent and be saved.
The only way the devil gets our soul is if we die in a state of mortal sin!

The only way the devil gets our soul is if we die in a state of mortal sin!
And even then, even in hell, our soul belongs to God. We are in hell because we chose to reject God, not because of some contest that the devil wins.

Satan and all of the fallen angels will not be somehow “rulers” or in charge in hell. Hell is where they will be imprisoned, punished, for all eternity.
