Can you receive Communion if you have a civil divorce?

My son was married civilly and divorced about a year ago. He has been away from the Church is just starting to come back. He received communion on Sunday and my deacon started to questioning me about my son status, if he was single, married. He is currently a single father and wants to be active for his son and himself. Did he do wrong to receive Communion?

Divorce, in and of itself, is not an impediment to receiving communion. Anyone who has been away from the church for a while should make a good confession but otherwise there are no impediments to his reception of communion. The only issue would be if he was divorced and remarried outside of the Church.
