Can you repent long after confession and still have it be valid?

The priest absolved me but I know it takes perfect or at least imperfect contrition to be truly forgiven during confession, I’m unsure I felt imperfect contrition at the time. Is it possible to feel bad later for sinstance , months or years or do they need to be reconfessed? Sorry if this is stupid.

You can be haunted by regrets even if God already forgave you. The sign of being sorry for these past sins is not a revelation in itself. It can be a sign of your heart working and you are correcting yourself as in truly feeling sorry for what you have done.

Your only forgiven with at least imperfect contrition though. Is it possible to get this after the fact or must it be done day of confession?

Imperfect contrition is fear of hell perfect contrition is sadness at offending the father whose all good and deserving of our love. Even if the priest grants absolution at least imperfect contrition must be felt. It’s said you can’t fool God.

I am not Catholic but I often wonder how a sin may not be truly forgiven if the priest absolved you. Is that even possible?

Through perfect or imperfect contrition at the time of confession or perfect contrition with intent to go to confession later outside of confession.

It sure is, if you intentionally withhold a mortal sin from the priest at confession. Note that this does not include simply forgetting a mortal sin or not knowing that a particular sin is grave, but willingly and knowingly withholding mortal sins in confession invalidates the absolution and is also a mortal sin itself.

I couldn’t find answer on the web.

Sins are forgiven through contrition not forgiven by what was said.

Do you have to repent in church is another way to word the question.

…felt…feel…
These are troublesome words.

Feelings have nothing to do with it.

Too many, way too many Catholics put too much, way too much stock on feelings. Contrition, like any proper act of love, is an action of the will, not the emotions.

That I understand. One can fool the priest but like Justinus stated above one cannot fool God.

Your right feeling doesn’t do it justice.
