Can you see God face to face while still alive?

Some people speculate that in John 18:6 with Jesus’ arrest, “When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground” that Jesus may have flashed his full divine glory for a second which made the soldiers fall on the ground since God’s divine glory is too hazardous for humans in the flesh.

It may seem sort of funny in light of some other verses, but the Old Testament actually exhorts people to seek God’s face in several passages. And especially since the advent of Jesus, we have that very opportunity, even if the vision is still dim in this life as per 1 Cor 13, compared to the Beatific Vision in the next life as others have mentioned. Some people have been given stronger “glimpses” of God in the here and now, however, known as private revelations. In any case, God is Spirit; to “see” Him is to know Him, in a direct and immediate sense. And He wants us to know Him; that’s the point of our faith in fact, and the reason Jesus came. Maybe the time wasn’t quite ripe yet before then, prior to His coming and the New Covenant (ref Gal 4:4). Anyway:

"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." John 17:3

He’s speaking of more than just head-knowledge.

John 14:9
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Each person of the Trinity is distinct from the other. However, each person of the Trinity is God.

In this scripture, Jesus is saying he is one in being with the Father. Therefore, seeing one person of the Trinity is to see God entire.

Lots to ruminate on here.
What do you suppose is meant by “all my goodness to pass in front of you”?
What do you suppose God is referring to when he speaks of his face?
And why cant we see it and live? Is this simply a choice of God or an inbuilt inability of man?
His Face is reckoned as His GLORY…

His Glory may be as Bright as 1000 Suns…

Since Man DisObeyed God and Obeyed Satan - our Bodies are Corrupted w/Death…

Even 1 Sun - hurts our eyes … and can bake us w/o protection and thirst us w/o water

So? E.G. 1000 Suns could (currently) be too much for our bodies… (but not our spirit)

When we have our Resurrected Bodies - we’ll see God Face to Face - His Glory…

I love colorful language. Lets not stop at 1000 Suns. Lets say infinite suns! Course that would cause problems for creation…that was a jest, sometimes we need to lighten up. 🙂

It’s God’s Glory which receives mention in the account of Moses and God.

I’m fine with even 1000 suns…

On a clear day - have you ever seen one very very bright Sun in all its glory? 🙂

God’s Glory? God’s Visage…? Beatific Vision?

Check this out: God’s GLORY is Visual …
  1. " To the Israelites (way way down below)
  2. the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. "
  3. 18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”
  4. 19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
  5. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”
  6. 21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”
