I am glad to recommend you one of the best spiritual books ever!!! 👍

It was written by Father Walter Ciszek SJ, a jesuit american priest (1904-1984) who went to evangelize Russia and was held prisoner and kept in solitary confinement in the prison of Lubianka for five years!!! and then sento to Siberia, where he spent 23 years as a prisioner.
He wrote a book called ‘With God in Russia’, where he tells what he went through,
but the real gem is ‘He leadeth me’, where he reveals his soul, shares his spiritual insights, and all he learned from the terrible terrible suffering he endured for so many years.
Saintly priest who is in process of canonization. :bowdown2:

Prop it well.

It depends. I had a hand fractured, and it healed well, well, the pain anyway, since I rely on my hands. Otherwise, it’s another matter

I am a chronic pain sufferer for 17 years now. I started working at the age of 14 because I was raised by a single mom ,and we were broke. So I worked mainly construction and hard labor in the 120 degree heat…on days when the weather men would say to stay indoors on certain days and at certain hours , I always thought that was funny because if I didn’t work I didn’t get paid. I worked with broken ankles , a broken collar bone, I worked a whole six months dragging my left leg, and I remember the carpenters telling me I was crazy that I needed to rest my leg. I was an Iron-worker and my boss was straight from Ireland. and one of his rules was that the word “can’t” would not be used…i am not saying this to boast. i’m just trying to explain the chronic pain condition i have now has kept me on disability for 14 yrs. In my wildest dreams I would never have thought I would end up on disability because I could not work. The pain I deal with, it’s my pride that is suffering the most. What is a man to his wife and son when he can’t provide. It’s tough, because you can’t see the pain. on the outside i look fine except for the extra lbs of fat I have put on due to inactivity…Anyway the point is that I am reading THE PROMISE by Father Jonathan Morris. God’s plan for when life hurts.
it is awesome…I feel like God is talking right to me thru this book. I highly recommend it

The Book of Job can be a powerful.
Yes! Yes! Yes! :extrahappy: The Book of Job is entirely dedicated to suffering. I also recommend G. K. Chesterton’s Introduction to it, found here: chesterton.org/introduction-to-job/

Meditating on the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary (or just on the Gospel’s Crucifixion stories), as well as some of the Psalms (particularly Psalm 22: newadvent.org/bible/psa021.htm, with commentary by St. Thomas: www4.desales.edu/~philtheo/loughlin/ATP/Psalm_22.html and www4.desales.edu/~philtheo/loughlin/ATP/) are also good.

God Bless you in your trials, Madeline616 🙂

Just wanted to say thanks for all of these great recommendations. I’ve purchased one book and many others that’ve been suggested will be on my soon-to-read list.

Thanks for taking the time to help!

Loving wishes in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Though I am not the one who started this thread, I would like to thank everyone for sharing lots of good resources.

I would like to add the following. I shared this public for a while. It is a book called Victim Souls. Please click here to access it.

Hopefully you can access it.

That sounds like a good read, Alma! Thanks for the info 🙂

St. Catherine of Siena: “My great consolation is to suffer, because I know that by suffering I shall gain a more perfect vision of God. Tribulations, therefore, far from being a pain to my soul, are a joy. I have seen the torments of Hell and of Purgatory; no speech could depict them. If unfortunate human beings had the least idea of what they were like, they would choose to die a thousand times rather than endure the slightest suffering there for a single day.”

Jesus to Mother Mary of the Divine Heart: “I redeemed mankind by the Cross; and by the Cross I still sanctify souls. The more firmly I fasten a soul to the Cross by suffering, it is a new crown for the work of the redemption.”

Hi,

Can anyone recommend any books on how to grow spiritually from/deal with/unite with Christ in the midst of trials and suffering, particularly physical suffering?

I’m aware of Father Benedict Groeschel’s wonderful books on the subject, and was hoping to learn of some more by other Catholic authors (Saints, priests and religious, or laity).

Thanks 🙂
I strongly recommend this; check it out:
