Can you talk me out of becoming a Catholic?

I’m pretty sure I’m making the right decision, but I’d like to hear any reasons why I should not become Catholic. Anyone have any thoughts?

Just trust the leading of the Holy Spirit. If you have investigated and studied Catholicism and are convinced that you belong there, go for it.

Read the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” first printed in US in March 2000.
This is the “authentic teaching” of the Church regarding Faith and Morals. Remember that you can not pick and choose what you want to believe if you become a Catholic.

The greatest gift we Catholics have is the presence of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist.

I can do it. If you become Catholic you will have to denounce Satan and all of his evil works. You will have to place a Crucifix in your home above the front door. You will have to love God above all things even your own family. You will have to love your enemies and always help those in need when asked.
You will have to attend every Sunday Mass even when your favorite football team is playing.

You will have to go to Confession from time to time to know that you are loved dearly in spite of your sinful nature. You will have to accept the Mother Church’s teaching regarding the forgiveness of your sins and believe in it. You will have to pick up your Cross and follow Jesus to your death through His death. You will have to speak about Jesus to those who do not know Him, and invite them to Mass even if you know they may not come. I know why I do this, but why in the world would you want to join this kind of Church? You really need to think about it.

Anybody else have any reasons why one should not be Catholic?

To become a Catholic, you aware aware that you have to believe all of the dogma taught by Catholicism.

Do you believe that the organization that calls itself Catholic and currently is headed by Pope Benedictus is in the eyes of almighty God exclusively the Church of Jesus Christ and the bride of Jesus Christ. Do you believe that there are certain benefits (such as the pope being incapable of being incorrect when teaching ex-Cathedra on faith and morals and no salvation outside of this organization) that exist only in this organization.

If you believe this then you should become Catholic (and I have no interest in talking you out of it) because the rest of the dogma logically follows (it would be inconsistent to believe the above and then not believe in say purgatory). If you do not believe this, then you should not become a Catholic, not on the basis of my say so but on the say so of Catholicism.

That is, *IF *I am deceived into thinking I’m making the right decision, then I should not become a Catholic. Don’t you agree?

Actually, that was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who first said that - Mr. Spock was merely quoting him. However - no matter who said it, it’s true, and it applies to our discussion here, in that, having eliminated other possibilities, and being left with the Catholic Faith, here we are.

This is a difficult question to answer inasmuch as it requires great faith that whatever has led you to the Catholic Church is of God. A good spiritual director might be able to help you – inquire at the Catholic parish you attend to see if they can suggest one.
