Can you tell me about contraception and Onan?

I was discussing contraception with a good friend of mine who is protestant, I gave him the example of Onan as the scriptural background of Catholic belief but he said the following:

“Onan’s crime was not that he was practicing contraception it was that he disobeyed God by refusing to give his brother’s wife children. Was it violating natural law or the fact that disobeyed a direct order? In the Bible when God gives a direct command and it is not obeyed the consequence is almost always death”

How can I reply to that?
