Ex-Canadian here, but frequent visitor. When I have joined the prayer of the Divine Office with priests in Canada in English, it has been always the 4-volume Catholic Book Publishing 4-volume set.
Strictly a personal preference . . I use the Saint Paul edition, which is a 2-volume set. (Exactly the same contents, of course). The St. Paul Edition has much greater contrast, very deep black print on ultra-white Bible-type paper. For me, it’s much easier to read, especially since my English reading isn’t 100% wonderful. The main volume contains all the hours for the entire year, EXCEPT the office of Readings, which is the second volume.
Some find that the 4-volume set is better for them because they use just one book all day, but then have to witch volumes 4 times. Others prefer the Saint Paul for the printing and the fact that you use the same two volumes every day, all year. The main volume of the Saint Paul eidtion also contains “selections” from the Office of Readings so when traveling, I take just that one and leave the much larger Office of Readings at home. The Saint Paul edition also prints the common parts of it each day, so there is no need for using cards for some of the prayers and such.
Fortuantely, the Divine Office is going to be retranslated and the “acretions” added by ICEL will be dropped.
I think I still ahve a few “rescued” copies of the main volume of the Saint Paul edition. These are copies that were ready to be tossed because the covers broke or whatever but the insides are still fine. If a Canadian would like to try one of these, I’d be happy to send it along. Last I knew, I had at least 2 or 3 “rescued” ones. They ahve been sitting in my library for years, presuming that some day, I’d find someone who wanted to pray the Divine Office but couldnt’ find one or afford one. Just tell me if you’d like one.
