Canadian National Public Radio Broadcasts Call for State Control of Religion, Especially Catholicism

OTTAWA, July 19, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Just as Senate approaches the final vote on the gay ‘marriage’ bill, C-38, Canada’s national public radio CBC Radio has aired a commentary by a retired professor from the Royal Military College calling for state control over religion, specifically Catholicism. While parliamentarians dismissed warnings by numerous religious leaders and experts that such laws would lead to religious persecution, former professor Bob Ferguson has called for “legislation to regulate the practice of religion.”

“Given the inertia of the Catholic Church, perhaps we could encourage reform by changing the environment in which all religions operate,” Ferguson began his commentary in measured tones yesterday. "Couldn’t we insist that human rights, employment and consumer legislation apply to them as it does other organizations? Then it would be illegal to require a particular marital status as a condition of employment or to exclude women from the priesthood. "

Ferguson continued, “Of course the Vatican wouldn’t like the changes, but they would come to accept them in time as a fact of life in Canada. Indeed I suspect many clergy would welcome the external pressure.”

Right. And we all remember how the Vatican caved in under the same sort of pressure from Henry VIII.
 
Is this also the viewpoint of the “average Joe” in Canada? Or is this another case of the 0.001% who think they’re in charge telling the other 99.999% how it’s going to be?

I don’t know whether to laugh my behind off at their arrogance, or to have pity over their stupidity…but one thing I’m sure of: No one wins a boxing match against God!
 
Well the Vatican seems to be trying to get along with China . they might do as well with Canada.
 
When I started reading it, I actually thought this article was satirical!

I though hatful, discriminatory speech was a crime in Canada?

Didn’t a newspaper get “sanctioned” for saying that while some indian children hate boarding schools, others like them (it being the politically correct thing to say ALL indian children hate boarding schools)?

This Bob Ferguson (the author of the opinion) is a engineer. I don’t mean to offend any engineers out there – I went to engineering school too – but God love em, they are not among the most enlightened thinkers in our society. I am surprised that Ferguson was a professor at the Royal Military College. That college turned out some fine minds. What happened to him?

Good grief! His proposal is just so plain dumb that it staggers the imagination. Maybe an all expenses paid vacation at Gitmo would cheer him up.

Next time the Conservatives are able to find a charismatic leader they will form a majority government. The current leader is quite capable, but not enough of a character to be a Canadian politician it would seem. He probably needs to be an anglo or franco Quebecker or maybe a “so is this guy french or english” type of Ontarian.

When that finally happens, they should seize the opportunity to dismantle the CBC. Completely. When Mulroney cut funding, they just got revenge. I would say privatize it completely but it would be too big of a mess to mop up. They do nothing to unite the country, they are only concerned in pushing their ultra, ultra liberal agenda. Truly they make the old Soviets look like amateurs.

There should be no state radio if the free market is too small to support the opposing talk-show opinions. It’s an opinion monopoly. I realize the Yanks do get tiresome to listen to with their rah-rah stuff and their relentless commercialism, but at least a person can seek and find a sizable segment whose values they truly share. I find that the ideal left-right balance I grew up with in Canada to be falling through like sand in an hourglass. In a sense, the exclusionist rah-rah stuff reminds a person of who they are so they are less likely to forget it. These days that’s a good thing.

I don’t recall seeing any reports that the Vatican had aquiesced to women’s ordination in China. Perhaps you have seen something?

Or is it you just don’t like their world view if it opposes the world view of the United States?

it is an age old question of what to do when there is a difference between the regulations of the civil government and a religion.

we’re told to give to Ceasar after all and if Ceasar says you can’t bar someone from employment because of their marital status or gender what are you going to do?

obviuosly there is a spectum here. Durring prohibition in the US for example, special exemptions were made for the religious use of wine. On the other hand animal and human sacrafices are illegal.
 
It is truly sad that the Government up there is trying to silence the Church. Didn’t we see, some similar action being done in Germany before WWII? We all know what happened afterwards don’t we. I’m afraid that Benedict XVI was right when he said “We are moving into a dictatorship worse then communism or fascism.” It has a name and its called moral relativism. I think that anyone who supports what Canadian National Public Radio said there, is a communist!

Communism and Fascism are different ends on the same candle. Both are anti-religion and anti-freedom.

I used to love being Canadian…but now this country is being forced to “open its mind” instead of its heart and, as a concequence, its brain is falling out. The Conservatives need Bernard Lord at the helm (he is exaclty the is-he-French-or-is-he-English) and we might have a fighting chance.
