Candle-Ministry: in the Sanctuary?

Grace and Peace,

I’ve been asked at my Parish to take on the responsibility of keeping the Candle in the Sanctuary alight.

Is there anything I need to know about this ministry?

Don’t burn yourself! The candles can get very hot, especially when they get to the bottom and it’s very easy to get burned. Other than that, there’s not much to know except that following the Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper the candle is removed (as is the Blessed Sacrament) and it’s not returned until after the Easter Vigil Mass.

I know in our parish the sanctuary candle is a 7 day candle and the sacristian usually changes it on Saturday unless for some reason it burns more quickly then the maintainance men change it.

Always use an oven mitt or some thick material to remove a hot candle. If your sanctuary lamp is like most types, there is a glass or plastic candle insert inside of a red (ordinarily) glass cylinder with a glass bottom. If the candle insert is glass, be careful never to drop it into the red outer cylinder. The bottom will break right off if this happens, and it is easy to do if you burn yourself while grabbing the neck of an almost-dead candle. If your lamp has a red sleeve without a bottom, breakage is less of a concern.
