What is that huge white candle with the cross that they dip in the water at baptism and is burning during mass? I can never figure out what it is. Also the red cand holder on the wall by the cross or above the alter I can never find out. I always thought the red one represented God’s presence or the holy spirit. All answers are helpful. Thank you!

The big white candle is the Pascal candle, which is blessed at the Easter Vigil and used at various Liturgies during the year, especially those involving baptism and funeral rites.

The red candle by is usually situated by the tabernacle and indicates the Real Presence of Jesus is present in the tabernacle in the form of consecrated hosts.

NB: There is no significance to the color red (in this instance). While the vigil lamp is often red, it is just as often (in my experience) white, and occasionally other colors.

I usually hear it called the sanctuary lamp, by the way, as most churches have the tabernacle located somewhere in the sanctuary of the church.

Paschal. Not Pascal. Just a note!
