Question:

I am going to services with my parents who are methodist this Christmas Eve. The service is a candlelight communion service. I am really worried about what to do when they do communion because we as Catholics are not supposed to partake because they do not believe in the true presence. It is a small church and I really do not want to cause a scandal by remaining in my pew. What should I do?

I understand it is teaching not to partake but if it is but wine “grape juice” and bread how is it different from eating anywhere, since this is not a mass but a service?

It causes scandal if you do take it because your actions would say that you believe that church’s teachings. In fact, you can be a witness of integrity by refusing to partake in what you don’t believe.

Don’t do it. If your parents raise objections, explain that as a Catholic, you have to obey the Church, much like they’d obey theirs. If it’s small and your parents are close with the parishioners, they’d probably know you’re Catholic anyway and know that you can’t receive

My inlaws are sweet Methodist folks.

Been where you are.

Talk to them BEFORE the service (and not a hurried chat in the car on the way there). Explain that as you respect the differences in the beliefs, you will not partake, but you will spend the time praying.

Just stand or sit (depending on what the congregation does) with your hands folded in prayer.

You WILL live through this.

It has been so long since I was at a methodist service, what do they do during communion?

While they are free to do things differently, both that I have been to recently process up, pew by pew, to partake of the elements.

Some may do the “pass the plate” sort, where there is a tray of bread/wafers and another tray of little teeny glasses of grape juice - these trays are passed from person to person down the isle. If they do the passing kind, it is a simple thing to just pass it on without partaking.

One more thing, my IL’s congregation is about 20 people, half of them are related to DH. I know small Methodist congregations 😃
