Candlemass... blessing of the candles.

What sort of candles would you have blessed tomorrow?

Traditionally, all the candles to be used in the church for the entire year were blessed on Candlemas day, but this practice has for the most part been discontinued, to my knowledge.

You can bring to be blessed any candles you plan to use for devotions in your home.

Today is Candlemass… with the blessing of the candles. How is this done? I haven’t been to Candlemass before. What should I expect?

Usually those with candles to be Blessed will have them blessed after daily Mass.

At my parish, we gather in the narthex. The priest blesses the candles and the parishoners then take a small candle. All of the candles are lit off one main candle and we walk into Church with the lights out.

The Mass today is a very special one. We gathered at the foyer of the Church and Father blessed all candles (every person carries one) and the ones to be used at the Church. We had a procession into the Church with the lit candles for Mass. The light of the candles represents the True Light, Jesus coming into our world at the Presentation. We had the blessing of a Franciscan Priest to celebrate Mass for us. It was Beautiful and I know full of blessings.

So, how was Candlemas celebrated at your church?

We didn’t have a procession - there was a little ceremony before Mass where those of us who wanted candles blessed gathered up the front, prayers were said and the candles sprinkled with Holy Water.

We then simply went back to our pews and Mass began. Apart from the fact that this time around there was no lighting of the candles (which has happened in other churches in other years) pretty much business as per usual.
