Do you use blessed prayer candles at home when you pray? I was just curious because I hear sometimes different opinions on this practice …
(“blessed candles can´t be taen out of curch” “It´s ok, just don´t take the church one´s and buy them for your own”)

I don’t use candles at home generally because I am concerned about starting fires.

My mother had a blessed candle that she would light during thunderstorms and put in the sink. Some people do light them in their house.

Traditionally, one took a certain type of candle to church on Candlemas and got them blessed, then you had blessed candles for the year. I never heard of any issue with this.

This is a nice idea! Usually, I buy them before the liturgy, only as much as I need to pray for each icon. Maybe the issue is just one of this tiny orthodoxy-intern discussions between local custom and faith practice…

I use candle sticks like dinner candles I have the holders on a metal tray either side of my crucifix in my bedroom.
I have left them burning once or twice which kinda scared me as I thought I had extinguished them. Am a silly man at times

I light a candle, but it’s usually a Yankee Candle or one from bath and body works.

I ❤️ rose scented candles during prayer

We have a Solemn Blessing of Candles that takes place on the Holyday of the Feast of the Encounter (Presentation) of Our Lord The blessed candles remind us that we have seen the True Light, Jesus Christ; and that the Holy Spirit dwells within us.

I don’t use blessed candles but I use soft scented candles from pier 1 imports, and/or buy a pack of unscented votive candles for my prayer table.

I have been purchasing beeswax tapers from a monastery. I light them for prayers then extinguish them. I also follow the custom of my mother and forebears, to light a 12 hour votive during the day on our home altar.

My church will routinely place candles that are too short for use in the church in a “free, help yourself” basket.

I honestly don’t know.

this link may be helpful…?

I do know that the Church has a special thing for bees- there’s a special blessing in the old Book of Blessings from Pre v2 especially for bees and beehives.

After mass, I brought a cool candle, the size of a shoe box -
Last Supper image on it - in a plastic bag,
And had the Priest bless it - after he degowned, and what a blessing he said !
In fact, I was so knocked out by his blessing -
I haven’t yet lit the candle 😛

I think that rule applies to church candles around the alter. I don’t think there are any such restrictions on blessed candles for use in the home. I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure.

I have seen something about beeswax candles as well. We will have to check sometime for posterity my friend!

I forgot to reply to the thread. I do use a blessed candle for the repose of my dad, and for the poor souls in purgatory. Also use them if there is some “emergency” or if the environment feels particularly devilish!
