Aside from the Easter Vigil, are the processional candles carried and used in Solemn forms of Masses during the Easter Season?

A fellow altar server of mine told us not to carry candles for the Gospel in our Baccalaureate Mass this Thursday. He added that the paschal candle is enough to honor the gospel.

There are only a few times during Holy Week when candles are not carried. The Holy Week rubrics specifically indicate this. Candles are appropriate during Easter season, Ordinary Time, Advent, and Lent. Basically, they are appropriate all the time, except during the aforementioned specific items during Holy Week.

He is mistaken. He is also not in charge of the liturgy. Follow the instructions of the priest celebrant.

It sounds like in your church the Easter candle is close to the ambo, but that is not always the case.

The only time Gospel candles are not to be used during the Easter season is during the Easter Vigil. The reason that custom has to be specified is that that night is different from all other nights and Masses.

Their use can be optional, depending on formality, but a Baccalaureate Mass is a great Mass of thanks. You should be pulling out all the stops.

There is no candle wax shortage. Use the Gospel candles.

Clarification: Used in the Gospel Reading in Masses aside the EV

I think he misunderstands the function of candles. Do processional candles “honor the celebrant” in a procession at the beginning or end of Mass? Of course not.

Processional candles are used as part of a procession of the book of the Gospels to the ambo. If there’s a procession, then there could be candles (with the exceptions that 1ke mentioned). If there’s no procession with the book of the Gospels, then it would make sense that there be no processional candles… 🤷
